Main dealers will tell you only they can cut and programme your car's keys. That's not true. Here's a straight comparison of cost, time and convenience.
Main dealers have to cover significant overheads — dealership premises, service technicians on manufacturer pay scales, warranty liability. A replacement key from a main dealer for a modern car typically costs £150 to £500, depending on the make and key type. That price usually excludes VAT and assumes you can get the car to them.
You'll also wait. Most dealers need 2–5 working days to order a blank key if they don't have one in stock, and then book a programming appointment. If you need it today, that's not an option.
A specialist auto locksmith carries key-cutting equipment and a wide range of blanks on board their vehicle. For most common cars, we can cut and programme a replacement key at your location, today. Typical costs for a transponder or remote key range from £95 to £200 — a significant saving on dealer prices.
The key difference is that we come to you. There's no tow truck, no waiting for an appointment, no dealership visit. You call, we arrive, the key is cut and programmed on site.
Yes. The physical key blank is cut to the same tolerance as a dealer blank, and the programming uses the same diagnostic protocols to pair the key to your car's ECU. There is no functional difference in the end result.
Rare cases include: very new vehicles where the manufacturer hasn't yet released programming protocols to the trade, or certain luxury brands that restrict ECU access. In those situations, we'll tell you upfront — we won't take the job and then fail. We'll advise the fastest route to a solution.
For the vast majority of UK cars, an experienced auto locksmith can cut and programme a replacement key faster, cheaper and more conveniently than a main dealer. The only reason to go to a dealer is if a specialist has told you your specific vehicle requires it.
